SLFP vehemently condemns imperialist resolution - SLFP
The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) in a statement signed by its General Secretary and Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena said the party totally rejects the resolution against Sri Lanka, moved at the UN Human Rights Council on Thursday, by the United States and a few countries.
The SLFP condemns the procedure adopted by these nations to get the resolution against Sri Lanka passed in the council.
"It is no secret that the imperialists who suppressed our country from 1505 to 1948 have been moving resolutions against Sri Lanka at the UN Human Rights Council with an ulterior motive of deterring the country's development drive in the aftermath of 30 years conflict," the statement added.
"The SLFP said that these invasive forces who ruled Sri Lanka from 1505 to 1948 are conspiring against the country based on the misleading information provided by the LTTE rump overseas, when Sri Lanka is in the process of rebuilding the country through national reconciliation process with the end of terrorism.
"It is no secret that a number of powerful countries exerted undue pressure to obtain support for this resolution at the UN Human Rights Council, in contravention of international norms and practices.
"The party added that the outcome of the resolution is not an unexpected one" The majority of nations in the council have not endorsed this resolution against Sri Lanka. The number of countries that voted against and the countries that abstained from voting are higher than the countries actually voted for the resolution.
"This gives an indication that the majority of nations do not endorse this resolution which is highly intrusive in nature against Sri Lanka," the statement said.
The statement adds that "this resolution has been adopted in the UN Human Rights Commission in contravention of the universally accepted premise that no country should meddle with internal affairs of other countries. "It is unfair that a selective mechanism is being adopted agaisnt Sri Lanka when there are number of countries in the world that have faced same situations".
"The party said that the UN Human Rights Commissioner who had reached preconceived decisions on Sri Lanka has been authorized to inquire into Sri Lanka under this resolution.
"This UN High Commissioner has proved herself of being partial.
"The party said that these countries can not create political unstability in Sri Lanka through moving this type of resolutions agaisnt Sri Lanka at UNHRC.
"The world can get a better understanding of the people's opinion in the country at the Western and Southern Provincial Council election that is to be held today.
"All progressive parties including the leader of Sri Lanka Freedom Party, President Mahinda Rajapaksa speak in one voice in this fight for justice and fair play, "the added.
